A 500 year old holiday cottage in the centre of Hartington
Knowl Cottage is between 500 and 700 years old, it could therefore have been built sometime in the 1300s. It was originally of cruck construction, with a thatched roof. Some time later the thatch was removed, and the walls raised to build a second floor. Part of the original cruck beam can still be seen both downstairs and is in fact featured upstairs in one of the bedrooms.
There are still plenty of further old beams to be seen, although these ones are not as old as the cottage itself. The general features of the cottage mean that there is a wonderful old style feel to it. Relaxing inside, you certainly feel you have stepped into the past.
In the spacious lounge there is an impressive inglenook fireplace with open grate, bordered by dressed stone lintels. There are also original stone mullion windows and beams. Without doubt this is a most relaxing room. There is a television, video, DVD player, full Sky TV, CD player, and WiFi. There is additionally a (shared) Sky sports room seating up to ten people in the courtyard behind the cottage, please clicik on the 'other information' tab on the top left for details.
The cottage is well heated with fully controllable central heating in addition to the open fire place. Along with an unlimited supply of wood for the fire, all heating is included in the rental.
The specification of this cotttage is of the highest quality as is reflected by the Tourist Board grading of 5 Star. There is a shaker style kitchen, with gloss work-tops and granite sink, full-sized fridge-freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, and also a microwave. The kitchen is extremely well equipped and just as an example, all china, that is plates, side plates, bowls, cups and mugs are from Britain's longest working manufacturer, Burleigh, based in the Potteries of course. The kitchen is adjacent to the open-plan beamed dining room.
On the first floor are three large bedrooms, all of which have good sized en-suites, two double rooms and one twin. One of the double rooms has an en-suite with a bath and a shower over, the other two rooms have showers. Again the age of the property is apparent from these rooms. Each bedroom has its own TV. The mattresses in the bedrooms are extra thick and of extremely high quality, as are the pillows and as is the bedding itself.
Despite being in the heart of the village, with the stone walls being in part almost 3 feet thick, once inside there is a real feeling of seclusion and peace. The cottage benefits from a telephone for incoming and out-going calls. To the front there is a lovely cottage garden with seating from where you can watch village life, whilst to the rear is a large courtyard with further seating.
There is off-road parking for two cars (or at a squeeze three small cars), with plenty more opportunities for free parking in the village.
There are three online booking sites on which Knowl Cottage appears - all three enable reviews to be posted by guests, in total there have been over 50 reviews and each one has given us a five star rating, apart from one person who have us a very positive four star. Please see a link to the site on which most reviews appear (they really are just as good on the other sites!) at the bottom right hand corner of this web-page.
An access statement is available upon request although please note that for those wilth mobility problems the cottage might present a problem with their being no facilities downstairs - although there is a toilet in our newly built sky sports room 15 yards away on the other side of the courtyard.
